Phonics Phail
For Thanksgiving I traveled back to the Midwest to visit my parents. It was a great time and my visit was long overdue. My mom is a music teacher and needed me to help her get something working in her classroom. While I was there I happened to notice a stack of papers sitting on her desk. On closer inspection I found that the papers were from kids who got in trouble and had to write “I will follow directions” 100 times. It brought back harsh memories of my time as a child. I was fanning through the papers and came across this:
I’ve known my mom for 27 years and I will have to say she is a pretty gracious person. She felt bad that the kid write so much, but he was writing the word wrong. So technically when he was instructed to write “I will follow directions” he failed to due the very thing he was being penalized for. If I were her, I would make the kid write it 100 times the *CORRECT* way and then getting him some spelling classes ’cause Hooked on Phonics did NOT work for him!
